'The Exorcist: Martyrs': A Bold New Chapter for Legendary Horror
Following the mixed reception of The Exorcist: Believer, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures handed the reins of the iconic horror franchise to modern horror master Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass). Written and directed by Flanagan, The Exorcist: Martyrs promises a radical departure from traditional possession tropes, blending dark crime procedural storytelling with relentless supernatural terror.
The Plot: NYPD Crime Procedural Meets Possession Noir
Moving away from standard family-centered exorcism stories, The Exorcist: Martyrs grounds its terror within a gritty police investigation.
The Crime: An NYPD detective (Scarlett Johansson) is tasked with investigating a horrifying double murder that defies rational explanation.
The Supernatural Link: As Detective investigation deepens, she discovers her 12-year-old son (Jacobi Jupe) has become subtly connected to an ancient, manipulative demonic force.
The Unholy Conflict: Paired with a fellow officer (Sasha Calle) and brought into contact with two enigmatic priests (Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne), she must race against time as law enforcement procedures collide with ancient spiritual warfare.
