'Bloodaxe': Michael Hirst Returns to the Viking Age
From Michael Hirst—the mastermind creator behind Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla—comes Bloodaxe, a high-octane historical drama series produced by MGM Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Already renewed for Season 2 ahead of its debut, the eight-episode epic series explores the brutal rise, political scheming, and bloody battles of one of history’s most infamous Norse rulers, Erik Bloodaxe.
The Plot: The Battle for the Throne of Norway
Set during the chaos of 10th-century Scandinavia, Bloodaxe follows legendary Norse raider Erik Haraldsson (known to history as "Erik Bloodaxe") and his formidable wife, Gunnhild.
The Civil War: Following the death of King Harald Fairhair, Norway is thrown into violent disarray as rival siblings, warlords, and chieftains vie for supreme control.
The Rise of Erik: Joined by his cunning and magical wife Gunnhild, Erik must navigate shifting loyalties, battlefield betrayals, and ruthless rivals to seize the Norwegian crown.
International Threats: The political storm spreads far beyond Norway's fjords, dragging in powerful monarchs from neighboring Scandinavian kingdoms and the court of King Athelstan in Anglo-Saxon England.
